KidsCon – The first Kid focused festival

Whether you’re a geek/comic nerd, love your movies, or into Disney, we have all heard of Comic Con (especially those Big Bang Theory fans). I’ve always wanted to attend a Comic Con but I either miss the dates or I can’t attend because of my kids. Well now, I have some amazing news for you. Comic Con Africa 2019 is hosting a spectacular four day event. For kids! It’s a family friendly, kids oriented convention. KidsCon is taking the term ‘fun and games’ to the next level by empowering kids to be expressive and embrace their individuality. It’s the first and entirely kid focused convention in Africa and will be hosted at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand between the 21st and 24th of September 2019. The interactive four-day convention is geared to celebrating and inspiring all kids to embrace the superhero within and to cosplay along with the those who are older, but still kids at heart.

To make sure that the kids rule the playground, KidsCon is designed by Kids for Kids, which is why the KidsCon Board of Little Experts was established. As a board of 14 diverse children (ages 5 to 10) the KidsCon experts shared their insights on various trends and products. Their input was used to create an unforgettable, dynamic and modern experience that’ll have parents itching to join in on the fun.

Children attending the festival will be stimulated as they engage with different interactive areas. Their creative flair will be sparked by the BIC Artist Corner then their imagination will surely run wild as they create new worlds while immersed in the Play-Doh Creations space. Visitors can also team up and face-off as they show off their blasting skills in the Hasbro Nerf Zone, and experience the Nerf Fornite blaster range, or play it safe by challenging mom to a game of Monopoly or taking a photo with dad at the Nintendo selfie wall and win wonderful prizes.

Visitors are in for a number of treats like meeting some of their favourite characters like, Mario Karts’ Mario and Luigi, your favourite My Little Pony and many more. Other activities include building a RC Car with Nintendo Labo and competing at the Transformers Speed Station to see who takes home the prize for transforming a Transformer in the least amount of time, and a chance to take a pic with Transformer Bumblebee. Besides the Mario Kart and Ultimate Dance competitions., there are numerous other giveaways at KidsCon. Families can shop, learn and play to their hearts content while enjoying the ultimate kids experience. Hosting the best fashion, the newest merchandise, a digital universe, and a gaming corner is only the tip of the iceberg. The awe-inspiring exhibitors will keep the whole family on their toes and occupied for hours.

Join the first Kid focused festival from the 21 September and be a part of the excitement of the first annual KidsCon. Tickets to Comic Con Africa are R160 with free access for children under 6 years of age and gives you access to the dedicated KidsCon Hall. Not a supermom

I often get asked how I do it. How do I juggle working full time, raising 3 kids, and still have time to blog? My answer is always that I’m not a supermom. I just do what needs to be done.

So here are my tips to juggling life with 3 kids.

      1. Routine – having a set routine is key. Our routine is the kids eat, then it’s bathtime, and then bedtime. Bedtime is at 8pm latest, even weekends.
      2. Bag packing – I pack all bags the night before. A change for clothing for Harper daily, then the lunches boxes get prepped with yoghurts and sandwiches being added first thing in the morning.
      3. Clothing – we ensure school clothes are set out the night before and Matthew packs his aftercare bag himself. He can do this because I’ve managed to pack his clothing in nice little sets so he can just reach in and get what he needs. Mark gets Ethan and Harper ready in the morning while I finish off the lunches and bag packing.
      4. Teamwork – Mark and I work together to make it work. One of us will either bath both kids while the other dresses them or we each do bath and dress of one child each. Matthew is old enough to wash and dress himself, we just check that he’s washed the essentials.https://www.instagram.com/p/BxK7lM8Jnib/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
      5. Meals – we only cook 1 meal for everyone to eat. If someone doesn’t like the food and doesn’t want to eat, they either go without or they get a peanut butter sandwich. There’s no time to cook 3 different meals each night.
      6. Screen time – Don’t be scared of putting the tv on and sitting them in front of it while you get a load of washing done.
      7. Play – my 3 are all 3 years apart, Matthew is 8, Ethan will be 5 and Harper will be 2. They can certainly entertain themselves for a little bit while you can a 10 minute breather.
      8. Sanity – I struggle with this one. My children don’t always listen and it tends to drive me a little crazy when I have to say the same thing 8 times over. I don’t have any working tips for this one but calling in the cavalry normally helps for me (the cavalry being Mark lol).
      9. Take a break – I’m guilty of not doing this. However, we all need breaks from our kids. We all need a little timeout away from the craziness and noise. Get your partner to take the kids one morning while you focus on you. Or when the kids have gone to bed, take that long, warm bubble bath (yes I hear you, Cape Town has water restrictions in place still but maybe do this once every other week or so).
      10. Let go of the mom guilt – it’s going to be there every single day. No matter what you do, no matter how hard you try, the guilt will always be there. Be kind to yourself and try to let it go. Try to get through the day and tomorrow it will be better.
      11. There you go, that’s how I am able to be a supermom. With a lot of help and planning. If you have anything to add to this list, please let me know below and maybe you can help some other moms out.

When cries turns to screams – a parent’s nightmare

Dislcaimer – post contains images that may offend sensitive viewers. The images are of a burn injury.

Have you ever experienced such terror that you couldn’t move for a few seconds? Terror at hearing your child scream in pain and not know what to do? That was me a few weeks ago when Ethan had a terrible accident.

We were away for the weekend. It was beautiful, the weather was perfect and the kids were well-behaved (mostly) and having the time of their lives. We were on the bank of the Breede River, glamping in the most perfect spot of Rivierzicht close to Robertson. Harper couldn’t contain her excitement of all the grass she was able to walk barefoot on and all the sand she could eat. We even took a few dips on the river. Heaven.

Just before she started eating the sand

Silly bums

On our last day there, we had made a fire in the pit to heat up our breakfast as there was no microwave for that purpose. Hours later, this gorgeous little barge came down the river. The barge offers trips down the river from a nearby campsite. There was so much excitement about this watercraft, especially from Ethan. It was his first time being this close to something so cool. He was jumping up and down in wonder and spotted a little dog on the barge. As the barge was casually drifting down the river, Ethan was following it, exclaiming at us to look, look, look! I was in the tent, packing up the last of our goodies as we were getting ready to leave.

The barge on the river
The fire pit – taken right before the incident

My friend had come around to chat about something and we were standing on the deck, looking at the river but not really taking note of our surroundings as we were deep in conversation. And then, disaster! I hear Ethan start crying and another friend of mine run to pick him up. At this point, his crying changed to screams and I was just standing there watching as everything unfolded. Thinking he just fell and scraped his knee, not really seeing the panic in my friend’s face, I took my time to make my way down to them.

My eldest
My middle
My baby

At this time, they had him under the tap that was close by and I only then realised the seriousness of the situation. You see, Ethan was following the barge on the river and not realised where he was walking as he was looking at the dog and laughing when he fell into the fire pit. Even though we had made fire hours before, the coals were still hot. I rushed to him and just held him, trying to calm him while my sister applied Burnshield to his hand.

First look at his injury

Sad little one after his first dressing change

Mark had gone to the ablution block during this time and when he returned and heard what happened, he immediately grabbed Ethan and got him into the car. I barely had time to grab my purse and get in the car before he was racing to the hospital. That was the longest 25 minute drive of my life. Ethan alternated from screaming, to crying, to whimpering in pain this whole time. And there was absolutely nothing I could do beside murmur a bunch of nonsensical words of comfort into his ear.

At the hospital, they immediately attended to him. When they realised that we had used Burnshield on his injury, they seemed to relax a bit and complimented us on having it at hand and using it. Ethan had a second degree burn on his right hand, loads of blisters and not much more. Considering how much more severe it could have been, we are so lucky that it wasn’t worse.

He has had to attend a Wound Clinic a couple times a week and eventually ended up having surgery on his hand to remove the dead, burned skin. I thank the plastic surgeon for his knowledge and care and for how gently he treated Ethan. Every time we walked into the clinic, Ethan screamed knowing that they had to remove the bandage to assess his wound.

Surgery day
First look after surgery

Without the surgery, I honestly think his healing would’ve taken longer than it has. His hand is looking so great now and he has healed so well. This was such a freak accident and nothing anyone could’ve done would’ve prevented it from happening.

Almost healed up

The lesson we take from this is that accidents happen, suddenly and without any warning. Always have a fully stocked first aid kit with you wherever you go. Especially ensure that it’s stocked with Burnshield.

Burnshield – definitely a must have in the first aid kit

Win a Hasbro Hamper

In my last post, I gave some ideas of what to get the kids for Christmas. I touched on some Hasbro Gaming that is available. These games are perfect to keep kids busy this school holiday, whether you’re staying home or going somewhere spectacular. Kids are busy little creatures and get bored so easily, these are sure to be hit to keep the boredom at bay! Here is some more information on those games.

Speak Out
Get ready to be doubled over with laughter with this ridiculous mouthpiece challenge game! The Speak Out game brings friends and family together for laugh-out-loud fun as players try to say different phrases while wearing a mouthpiece that won’t let them shut their mouth. In the Speak Out game, players draw from the deck and read the phrase as best as they can, but it’s not so easy to do when the mouthpiece is hindering them from forming words correctly. The timer counts down as players try to say phrases such as “he’s my stealthy pet ferret name Garrett”, “slow down, you careless clown”, or “pelicans love pollywog falafels.” The laughter continues as players try to decipher what in the world their teammate is trying to say, and must correctly guess the phrase in order to earn the card. The team with the most cards at the end of the game wins.

Pie Face Cannon
The Pie Face Cannon game is a real “”blast”” as players take aim and “”pie”” their opponent with a cannon full of whipped cream (whipped cream not included,.) One player puts their chin on the chin rest behind the face mask. The other player aims the cannon and launches the whipped cream (whipped cream not included, additional purchase required). The player behind the mask can try to avoid getting “”pie-faced”” by using the blocking hand. Players earn points by either blocking themselves or by successfully “”pie-ing”” their opponent. The first player to get 5 points wins!

Fantastic Gymnastics
Get into the swing of things with this compelling and unique Fantastic Gymnastics game. Players time their speed and rhythm to gain momentum to flip the gymnast figure around the high bar. At the right moment, hit the release button to let him fly, and try to stick the perfect landing. Get him to land on the mat on his feet for the win! Play solo, head-to-head, or challenge friends to a tournament. Step-by-step instruction sheet also features tips for getting the perfect 100-point score.

Hearing Things
Who knows what’s going to come out of your teammate’s mouth? The Hearing things game, Hasbro’s twist on the online viral “”Whisper Challenge”” sensation has you guessing what you think your teammate is saying by reading their lips. One player puts on the speech-cancelling electronic headphones and the other player says the random phrase shown on the card such as, “”Pigeons like to cuddle”” or “”You’re the champ of the camp “”. The game headphones limit the player‘s ability to hear what their teammate is saying out loud, and the player has to figure it out to earn the card. The player with the most cards wins. The game comes with speech-cancelling electronic game headphones, and 150 cards with 600 phrases.

Don’t Lose Your Cool
Inspired by viral challenges that have gathered billions of views across the Internet, this game tests one’s ability to remain calm under pressure. Players wear the Cool-O-Meter unit that measures heart rate, and the opposing team rolls the dice that will determine how they’ll try to get a player to get flustered. For example, opponents might have to get up close to the player and sniff them, or make pig noises. If the player reacts -laughs, cringes, flinches, etc., their heart rate may go up and the meter will rise. They might think that they can hide their reactions, but the Cool-O-Meter will show what’s really going on! When the meter gets high enough, the lights get to red, the alarm will sound, and the opponent wins that round for making them lose their composure.

Don’t Step In It
Be careful not to poop out while playing this hilarious game with messy consequences! Put on a blindfold, spin the spinner, and then take that many steps across the game mat. But watch out! Little piles of compound, molded in the shape of poop have been strategically placed on the mat. Sometimes players will have to add a poop, remove a poop, or even re-arrange the poops along the mat. Who can avoid the number twos to be number one to win?

Blindfolded Twister
The game that ties you up in knots now features blindfolds and textured shapes for a touch of mystery and loads of fun! In the Blindfolded Twister game, players still move to spots on the mat, but now they do it wearing blindfolds and play completely by touch and memory. The player chosen as the Spinner calls out the moves on the game spinner, and then the players wearing blindfolds feel around the textured shapes with their hands and feet to move around the mat. Get ready for loads of laughs whether playing the game or just watching! It’s hilarious to see how players can end up in some really funny and awkward positions. Who will be the last player standing to win?

Hasbro has given me a Festive Hamper to giveaway to one lucky winner. All you need to do to win is complete the form below.

There is no right or wrong way to trust your instincts

*written in collaboration with Baby Dove

As a parent of 3, I’ve had to learn to trust my instincts. From insisting that my kid gets seen to and my fears taken seriously at a paediatrician’s office, to knowing that my kid doesn’t want to kiss and hug the aunty and not forcing him to do it. From using different sleep training methods for each of them, to not forcing them to part with a dummy. And that one time I navigated the path from our bedroom to the kids room in the dark and not stepping on one Lego piece! #winning

TRY OURS! NO TRY OURS!
When it comes to baby products, there are hundreds of different items on the market. Each significant in their own way and each designed to make me feel like a failure for not choosing their specific product. This bum cream takes away rashes immediately, but the other one makes sure your baby doesn’t even get one in the first place. This wet wipe works like a lotion but this fragrance free one won’t harm your baby’s bottom. Try this formula, no try this bottle, wait, wait wait, try this 2-in-1 shampoo and you won’t be sorry. For me, it was a slow process of elimination to find the best products that work for my kids and that was most affordable for me. I use different products across most of the major baby product brands out there because each one has something specific that works for my children.

TRUST YOUR WAY
You know, Baby Dove has this slogan “Trust Your Way” which I love. For me it means that no one is better than anyone else. No one knows better than I do. But only I know my baby. Only I know when something is wrong, or when she just needs a little cuddle. Only I know what her cries mean and that she’s ticklish in a specific spot. Trusting your way means trusting your instincts when it comes to your baby. Trusting your way means that you’re the best parent you can be for your child. Whether that means you’re a full time working mom who is doing the best she can to make up for lost time in the evenings and weekends or you’re a stay-at-home dad who sometimes longs for a decent chat with another adult over an ice cold beer.

NO RIGHT WAY
There is no right or wrong way to trust yourself. There is no right or wrong way to care for your child. To be there and do the best you can. We are all in this together and we need to not only trust our own way but also trust that the people around us are doing what needs to be done for themselves and their families.

What does #TrustYourWay mean to you?

Sometimes, it’s hard

Being a mom is hard. There I said it. It’s not the easiest job in the world. It’s not all sunshine and roses. It’s not having a jol and living your best life. Nope, sorry. If anyone tells you it is, they’re lying. Don’t get me wrong. Being a mom is the best thing that ever happened to me. There are the moments that make your heart poop chocolates and you exhale glitter, the moments that you love your kid so much you can’t breath, the moments where you’d lay your life down for your child.

But honestly, those moments exist to remind us during the rough times. When your baby won’t sleep, she’s been awake since 1:06 and it’s 3:47 am and you have to get up at 5am to get ready for work. When your almost 4 year old is up again for the nineteenth time just to tell you that he ate his porridge and food at creche. When your 7 year old loses his 4th jacket at school and the second term wasn’t even over yet. Those moments remind us not to drop kick our kids like they’re a rugby ball and we’re converting for the Springboks. Those moments remind us that we’re not animals and can’t eat our young.

Can we just stop with the sunshine and glitter bullshit and tell new moms how tough this shit is? Maybe then those moms will be better prepared for how kak it can be. The neverending tiredness. The constant touching. The ‘mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy, moooommmmyyy!!’ that will make your ears bleed. The endless nappy changes, and bottle making, and bum wiping. The fact that even when you’re sick, probably half dying, and you still have to do all the things you do when you’re hearty and hale.

I’m not saying don’t talk about the wonderful things, I’m just  saying don’t gloss over the bad things.

I love my kids. Like with all my heart and I’d die for them type of love them. But sometimes, it’s hard….

Disclaimer – (can’t believe I feel like I need to write this but you know…) I love my children. I am grateful for them and for the fact that I could bring them into this world. I do not wish I didn’t have children. I do not wish that my children will just disappear. I will not eat them, seriously.

My tired is tired

Hi everyone!!! (Or at least to the 1 person who actually reads my blog lol.) I won’t go into why I haven’t been here for a while (again) but I missed this little space of mine and I’m hoping things will get back to normal soon and you’ll continue to follow along.

A little update

The Car

We still don’t have our car back. The panelbeaters took forever to find parts and then the assessor took forever to approve the quote because the parts costs were way over their budget. But eventually everything was approved and the reparation commenced. However, it’s going to be another few weeks before we get the car back because one of the parts are only available in 3 weeks and then they must still spray the car. Ai,I just wish I could let an adultier adult deal with this mess.

The Kids
The children are mostly okay. They’re still alive and I still love them, so I guess we’re doing great!
Matthew is at holiday car for the first 2 weeks of the holidays (I’ll take the last week off from work and spend it at home with him.
Ethan is having trouble staying in his bed at night. We have to fight with him for an hour every damn night to get him to fall asleep. And then he wakes up during the night and migrates to our bed.
Harper is also having some trouble with sleep. She wakes and cries and thrashes like it’s no ones business at freaking 3am and nothing we do can console her. She decides when she’s done. No amount of holding, shushing, bottle offering or pacing will change her mind until she’s ready. So young and so headstrong already, heaven help me.

The Parents
Mark seems to have made peace with the fact that he’ll get his car when he gets it. Guess he realised that no matter how much he stresses about it, it’s not going to make the car come home sooner.
I am just so fucking tired. Gosh, I don’t remember being this tired when the boys were babies. I can’t seem to function mentally and my eating is all over the place. Guys, I have picked up all the weight I lost during my pregnancy and then some. I have 5 hours broken sleep every night, wake up tired (or rather I get screamed at till I wake), and then I sit at work the whole day and eat to stay awake. I just can’t do this to myself anymore. Goodness, I need to make a change and I need to make it soon!

Urgh, I hate that my blog posts are typically moan sessions lately but that’s my life at the moment. Any tips for this mom to combat the tiredness enough to make a concerted effort to tidy the house, nevermind any tips to combat the weight gain and starting a healthier lifestyle?

A luxury called sleep

Babies are a wondrous creation. They’re living miracles if you think about how they’re made and what it took to get them here. Babies are a joy, they can put a smile on almost anyone’s face, and they are the cutest little things on this earth. But (and it’s a big but) babies are also full of crap. They can make the strongest, most confident man break down. They have the ability to somehow make you go from hero to zero in 0.009 seconds. They can have ear piercing screams/cries, the most foul smelling diaper explosions, and make you beyond exhausted. And if given the choice, I’d do it all over again. And again. And again. It’s not really a secret that I wanted to have a big family with at least 5 children. But with today’s financial struggles, we have closed shop with our 3. And gosh, after the last few nights, I don’t know if I have the energy to cope with more babies after Harper.

It seems we’ve hit our 8 month sleep regression and it’s near impossible to get a full night’s sleep. Harper went from sleeping through 8pm to 6:30am to waking up at 2:45 and thinking it’s playtime, only going back to sleep at the 4am mark (an hour before I have to get up for work). She wakes up in her cot, sits up and then screams for one of us to pick her up and put her in our bed, which we do (because sleep). But instead of laying down and curling into my side like “she’s supposed to” (can we all laugh at that statement), no, she sits up, bounces between me and her dad, or stands against the headboard and looks like she’s playing with someone sitting on top of it (scary AF).

I know this will pass (in 3-6 weeks they say), and hopefully it’ll pass without us instilling new habits that we don’t really want her to have at the end of this sleep regression. So I’ve tried to stop picking her up when she cries, just popping her dummy back in and laying her down again. This hasn’t work yet but I’m going to remain hopeful.

And, can you believe that I had to Google why she suddenly stopped sleeping through? Having been through twice before? Gosh, I felt like such a newb!

So for now, sleep is a luxury for us and I would give anything to have an uninterrupted 8 hours of it.

A few weeks ago, the kids received a special delivery from BabyWombWorld and they’re loving it (so am I). I love the quality and the educational value of these Tooky Toys.

The boys received a 135 piece box of wooden blocks. It was a jungle theme with little wooden jungle creatures! There’s  floor puzzle that you connect and use as the base for your blocks. Ethan had a ball building a little story for us, making the tree lines, with the hippo in the pond and the lion roaring at the giraffe. Matthew eventually joined in and the 2 of them played happily (and without fighting) for a good hour.

The fact that the blocks are wooden means they’re durable and can withstand being thrown around (or aimed at someone’s head) and stepped on. I often find the boys playing together in their room having added some of their other wooden blocks and creating bigger scenes and stories. I just wish these toys came with an automatic pack away option.

We also received a beads coaster for Harper. She loves moving the beads around on the rungs and because they’re wooden, I find her using some of the beads as teething toys. Chewing on them and trying to get her head through the rungs to reach a bead at the back. This toy is colourful and everything is fixed to the base, so there’s very little risk of baby losing anything. Oh and the coaster also has suction cups underneath to stabilise it. Love, love, love! I even catch Ethan now and again playing with the coaster. So it doesn’t only keep babies occupied.

There are loads more options on BabyWombworld‘s website. Check them out. They make wonderful gifts and are definitely a worthy investment.
