I remember playing Rummikub as a family more than 16 years ago. I bought my family’s first set when I used to work as a casual at CNA. We had hours of fun and loads of arguments over what was allowed and what we deemed acceptable plays. Can you believe that Rummikub has been entertaining families for over 70 years?
My mom was a huge fan of card games, so naturally Rummikub became a firm favourite. Rummikub is a tile-based game for 2 to 4 players, combining elements of the card game rummy and mahjong. You use coloured numbered tiles to creates “groups” or “sets”.
How to play:
A group is made from three or four same-value tiles in distinct colors. For example: red 7, blue 7, black 7 and orange 7.
A set (or run) is composed of three or more, same-colored tiles, in consecutive number order. (A 1 may not follow a 13.)
There are also 2 Jokers in the set. A Joker may be used for any tile and its point value is that of the tile it represents. Keeping a joker on your rack is also a good strategy; however, you risk being caught with it (earning a penalty of 30 points) when another player shouts “Rummikub” and ends the game.
Game play continues until a player has used all the tiles in the rack, at which point they should call out “Rummikub,” and are declared the winner. If the pool runs out of tiles, play continues until there is a winner or no player can make a valid play.
I love Rummikub because it’s a great family game, helping with counting for younger kids or strategy tactics for the older kids. The tiles are big enough to handle easily and the racks are sturdy and can stand up to little hands grabbing it. Family time will only get better with Rummikub at the table!
