A while back, I was approached by Ecsponent Biotech to participate in a MyOmega test which tests whether I have adequate levels of Omega-3 DHA in my body for my baby. I didn’t even know what that was until they contacted me. My doctor had never mentioned ever needing to have the test done and I had no clue that it was such a necessary test .
What is Omega-3?
Your baby’s brain development is dependent on the mother’s omega-3 DHA levels during pregnancy. DHA is a polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acid and the most abundant omega-3 fatty acid in the brain. However, the human body is unable to produce DHA, which is taken in through diet, or via supplements.
Approximately 70% of the total number of brain cells meant to last throughout a person’s lifetime come from the DHA available during pregnancy, before the child’s birth. These levels have been closely linked to intelligence and cognitive development, eye development and are also linked to healthy gestational weight and length.
Even after birth, breastfeeding babies are dependent on mom’s omega-3 DHA intake for growth and development. For these reasons, monitoring omega-3 levels of a pregnant or breastfeeding mom is vital during and after pregnancy.
Who does the tests?
Ecsponent Biotech is a South African company, that invests in products and services that promote the adoption of personalised and regenerative medicine among South Africans to improve their quality of life. In addition to Ecsponent Biotech’s stem cell service, CryoSave, has launched two vital omega-3 tests for expectant mothers – MyOmega and MyMilk. The MyOmega and MyMilk tests give parents and families peace of mind that they are providing adequate levels of omega-3 DHA to their child via a detailed report which includes recommendations based on findings. The report allows moms to alter their diet, or take additional supplements, according to the context of their personal health profile.
I received the test in a really pretty package. The test is a home test and is really easy to do with very clear instructions.
All the contents of the package are clearly labeled and there are detailed instructions on how to use each item.
The finger prick test wasn’t half bad and the rest of the test went smoothly.
Sending the sample back to the lab is as easy as pie. There is a courier bag and waybill included in the package. Then you just call them to arrange collection and done!
The results are I love the detail in the report and that it’s signed off my a medical doctor.
The rest of the report gives you more details on the what’s and why’s of Omega-3 and DHA. It also provides a guide on how to supplement your Omega-3 and gives the food sources as well.
For R990, I understand that it’s a bit pricey to do willy nilly and with no idea if your medical aid will even pay for it. But being pregnant and the paranoia and worry that comes with that, it’s a small price to pay to ensure that your body is sourcing enough minerals for your baby.
