Trip up the mountain

We got invited to join the Table Mountain Cableway team for a morning exploring one of the 7 Wonders of the World.

Table Mountain Cableway has kicked off their Kidz Season on 1 May 2016. 2 children under 18 can ride FREE when an adult return ticket is purchased. Adult return tickets are R240 each (a bit pricey but when the normal rate for children is R115 per child, it’s worth it. The special runs until 30 September 2016 and is valid on weekends, public holidays and during the June school holidays.

I was so excited as I packed jackets and beanies and gloves on Saturday morning. We left home and Matthew kept asking me where we were going again and again until I told him it’s a secret. We eventually arrived and parked at the Lower Tafelberg parking lot and caught the MyCiti bus up to the Cable Station. The bus drive was a novelty for Matthew. He couldn’t pull his gaze away from the windows. Ethan just seemed like he was taking it all in, not too fazed with all that was going on.

We made it to the Cable Station and waited our turn to board the cable car. Matthew seemed a bit weary at first, as he has a bit of a fear of heights but he did brilliantly! He was amazed at the views and kept asking why it was called a car when it didn’t even look like one. You guys, the cable car is amazing! The floor spins, slowly, giving passengers a 360 degree view. The trip in the cable car takes between 5 to 7.5 minutes depending on the wind. But I must say, it seemed so much quicker than 5 minutes.

Once on the top, the exploring began. Matthew was fascinated with looking down at the city (which was mostly covered by clouds) and pointing out the boats and pools he could see. We tried to complete the treasure hunt the boys were given but it’s a bit hard to do with an almost 2 year old on your arm and your 5 year old wanting to run around and climb the rocks. We made our way to the Table Mountain Café and enjoyed a delicious lunch.

Table Mountain also has a newly opened Wifi lounge with free Wifi and ports to charge your mobile devices. This was really great as we had a chance to sit down and upload our photos we took to Instagram and Facebook.

All in all, we had a lot of fun. The boys were exhausted from exploring and fell asleep in the car on the way home. I must say, though, if we ever do it again, it will be when Ethan is older or without him (sad to say). It was hard enough keeping track of Matthew and making sure he didn’t get too close to the edges. But having to carry Ethan around (because he didn’t want to walk most of the time) was tiring. Maybe not an ideal place for an almost 2 year old.

It’s lovely up there and the kids enjoy it immensely! I suppose we didn’t know what to expect from the children, so will definitely prepare better mentally next time 🙂
